Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given has joined the chorus of critics regarding Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels, who faced scrutiny for his role in Danny Welbeck’s free-kick goal for Brighton.

Despite Forest initially leading the match with a penalty from Chris Wood, they ultimately settled for a draw after Welbeck’s shot found its way past Sels at his near post.

While Ramon Sosa later equalized for Forest, questions lingered about whether they could have secured a win and extended their unbeaten streak.

Given expressed disappointment in Sels during his analysis for BBC’s Match of the Day 2, noting, “The free-kick was on the goalkeeper’s side. He should have positioned himself better.”

Given referenced former Forest player Roy Keane’s harsh critique of Sels, who suggested docking the goalkeeper’s wages.

Although Given didn’t go that far, he emphasized the kind of accountability a player would face for such a mistake, recalling how teammates like Alan Shearer would react. He concluded that Sels should have been able to save the shot, pointing out that the goalkeeper appeared to react late.
